Note to the person who posts under ""Get over the past"

I never take time out to call out any one commentor. But the person who writes under ""Get over the past" they are crazy. Do not respond to them, and maybe she will go away. Hopefully she will get the help she desperately needs.

Can you match ip addresses up with past comments? The comments were very personal and may not necessarily have been from a stranger who empathizes with Bernadette.

I wouldn't rule out a stranger taking a strong stand. High profile murder cases bring out the weirdness in some people. If some people "fall in love" with & marry serial killers, I wouldn't put it past someone to become overly involved and emotional about this case.

What posts could you not find?

It's true that murderers have sympathisers and for some inexplicable reason some people fall in love with murderers, but I don't agree that a stranger is taking a strong stand on this blog.
Actually, if you look under Dec 2014, you will find that the comments written by Sallyjohnson, MrAnonymous, Anonymous and Judy have a similar vernacular and defence of Bernadette. They are also similar to other "Anonymous" posts on this blog defending Bernadette. They all repeat the same points ad nauseum: "decades ago", "vigilante", "bullying", "lynch mob", passionate defence of Bernadette and sister, berating blog owner, "Bernadette did her time", "get a life", reiterating their belief that Kirsten was a bully, referring to the blog owner and supporters of Kirsten as "psycho", biblical quotes, mentions how Christians should behave, "outing Bernadette".
Some of the above points were mentioned in the recent comments, too. Nope, it's not a stranger at all, imo. The comments are too similar to discount.

It's not a stupid question. The only thing I know is that they were maroon sweatpants. I don't know if they were sweats used to play sports at Miramonte. A quick google search will give you the Miramonte school colors. Wasn't the school year over anyway? Yes, people can and do wear "socially acceptable" sweats in this present age, but I don't know if people wore them in the mid 80's (I blessed the world with my arrival at the end of the 80's).

Okay, so they weren't school sweats. If one was to read into why Bernadette wore maroon pants.... of all colors, one could surmise that she purposely wore maroon sweats because blood dries quickly and is a sort of maroon color when dry. I don't think she was thinking rationally before she picked Kirsten up. If she was thinking rationally, she would have foreseen how luring Kirsten out of her house under false pretences to an empty car-park in order to divulge feelings of admiration for her would have been construed as odd. It is also understandable that planning to be alone with Kirsten would be interpreted as something sexual.
I don't believe her misguidedness was due to naivety.

I have no doubt it's the same person and someone close to Bernadette. If it happened once, I would suggest that the person allowed their anger to cloud their judgement, but many comments have been written and the latest ones portray her to be immoral, mentally unstable and ghoulish amongst many other things. Taking pleasure in the death of a murdered child by suggesting she deserved it, propagating the lie that Kirsten bullied Bernadette, cruelly blaming Kirsten's parents for her death by suggesting they should have "taught her kindness" and stating that the owner of the blog should have been the one that was stabbed clearly indicates the writer of the comments is a very twisted woman. Also, referring to the blog owner as a c**t in the recent comments and a previous tirade tantrum was just...sad.

I think Bernadette had some sort of non sexual infatuation with Kirsten (a "girl crush"). According to articles, Kirsten did interpret Bernadette's desperation for her approval as something sexual. Bernadette stated that Kirsten referred to her as "that way", which was a phraze used to refer to someone a homosexual in the 80's. I read a comment on this site which stated that a friend of both Kirsten and Bernadette said that Bernadette idolized Kirsten. Another comment stated that Bernadette told Kirsten's mother that Kirsten should wear something nice for the initiation dinner. Looking at it from Kirsten's perspective, I too would have thought that Bernadette's lie about the initiation dinner to get me alone with her, her telling my mother I should wear something nice and then her revealing she did this so she could get to know me better because she admired me was because she had some sort of crush on me. I think many 15 year olds would have thought the same thing and as you wrote: be "freaked" over it. I certainly would have if I was in that position and would have used much more colorful language to refer to her than "weird".

Judging from a picture of Bernadette going into court, she looked taller than average height (average height for a white woman is 5'4/5'5). Kirsten is described as petite, so I assumed she was below average height. If she was smaller that 5', Bernadette is such a damn monster.

When I read that "Death of a Cheerleader" was based on a true story, I was unable to look at the stabbing scene. Although the film is stated to have many inaccuracies, the stabbing scene is consistent with what really happened. I would be devastated to watch that as a family member or friend of Kirsten's.

Yes, especially as she was attacked from behind. It's horrible to think about what that poor girl went through. If people are honest and put themselves in Kirsten's shoes, I think many people would have reacted to Bernadette the same way that Kirsten did. If "weird" was the only name she called Bernadette, I think she was very composed in her frightened state.
I read somewhere that Bernadette was extremely jealous of the friendship between her childhood friend and Kirsten, which is how Kirsten became the focus of Bernadette's unhealthy obsession. If Bernadette's childhood friend became good friends with someone else, I think Bernadette would have centered her attention on that person. Unfortunately, I think Bernadette was going to hurt someone at some point. If only people were aware of how dangerous she could become.

Bernadette, I still feel the same way about her as we discussed before. I had been under the assumption that there really was a party and maybe she had her "party clothes" in the car. Because she said she was babysitting so I thought perhaps that's why she wore sweats & she planned on changing after they talked. But finding out that there was not a party makes me wonder what she was hoping to happen. Did she think that she could win Kirsten over and hang out at her house that night? If so, why the sweats? Did she think she could threaten Kirsten into being her friend? It makes me think that she put more thought into the murder. Certain things don't add up to that theory but it's still the most plausible. was the knife 18 inches or was the blade 18 inches? I have an 18 inch knife (blunt on the end) the only time I use it is to carve big hunks of meat (pot roast, tri tip, prime rib) or to cut a watermelon. It's too big for anything else!

Yes, I do think she thought she could win Kirsten over. The following is a newspaper excerpt detailing Bernadette's taped confession in court:
Protti drove Costas in Protti' s family Pinto to a Moraga church parking lot, where they talked for about 30 minutes. Protti: "We just talked but she made me feel really dumb". All the feelings I had toward her came out and she thought I'd be weird and I was upset." After Costas became alarmed by Protti and sought help from a nearby resident who drove her home, Protti says she followed the pair back to Costas' neighborhood, pulled up behind the car carrying Costas, grabbed a knife in her Pinto, and strode up to Costas on a neighbor's front porch. Protti:"I just got out of the car and she started telling me to go away and I just got angry and I did it.

If there was evidence of a party, there would information about it. I think she made up the story about the party because she was too embarrassed to admit she lured Kirsten out of her house in a naive attempt to befriend her. I think she was unhinged due to some sort of mental breakdown and had the knife in the car in case something went wrong. What caused the breakdown? We can only speculate.

The following is a snippet from a newspaper:
Costas represented "Protti' s inability to be a highschool success. The emotional , 90-minute tape was played before a packed courtroom here on the second day of the 16-year-old Protti's trial of murd ering Kirsten Costas 15, a cheerleader at Miramonte High School in Orinda. Protti: "The end of my sophomore year, I had a lot of inferiority feelings and really bad feelings about myself," Protti said on the tape, which was made after she confessed to an FBI agent on Dec. 11. "I lost for cheerleader, I didn't get in the club I wanted to. and I didn't get on the year -"All that stuff — she just seemed to sort of represent it and she brought it all back like losing at things, or looks, or money, or popularity or things that are stupid."
The following is from her taped confession:
"I was afraid she was gonna tell everybody I was really weird. I thought, "Oh my God, everything' s going wrong she's gonna tell everybody. She's so outspoken, and I think she would just say, Oh my god, you wouldn't believe what happened with Bernadette —she's just so weird and that would stay in their minds"

As I wrote above, I think lured Kirsten out of her house in her misguided delusion to befriend her. When she didn't get the response she hoped for, her behavior probably became hysterical and she was talking incoherently, which probably scared Kirsten and prompted her to flee from the car.

I don't know. Maybe she didn't look as unkempt as the description of the clothing implies. Maybe she was just wearing typical average clothes.

I assumed it was the blade. Some articles state the knife was 18inch. Others state it was 15inch. Whichever it was, it was a big ass knife.

A natural reaction would be to alarmed at something so strange. I understand what you are suggesting, but you are looking at this from a rational perspective. Bernadette doesn’t appear to have been sane and insane people are certainly not rational. If she was thinking coherently, she would have deduced how ridiculous and absurd her plan to get Kirsten alone was. It is possible that she wore clothes in preparation to kill Kirsten if she didn't get the response she expected. There is no logical explanation for having a 15/18 inch knife in the car. If in the unlikely event that she did find the knife in the car, why didn't she return it to the car after the murder? There was not party. It would have been mentioned in newspaper articles detailing her taped confession that was played in court. There is no evidence of any party because there was no party.

Of all the phrases the friend could have used to describe Bernadette’s hysterical behaviour, she chose "you sound like you have killed somebody” Little did she know...
Actually, I think "KJ" was the friend that supported Bernadette through the trial and vehemently criticized Kirsten.

Or, it suggests that she wanted attention. And I don't know that I'm looking to give her the benefit of the doubt regarding the murder. That's very hard to do! I think because I didn't know her then, I only know her from now, and I do know that she's remorseful and not the same person she was then and that she did suffer a psychotic break. It's a hard thing to wrap your head around. And no matter the circumstances, Kirsten is dead and many people will never recover from that

Bernadette was insane. Not just any “shy quiet girl” is capable of “snapping” and behaving like Bernadette did, unless she is mentally disturbed. I know this is not what you are necessarily implying, but your sentence suggests that one should always be consciously aware to an excessive degree about what one says and pander to the quiet girl if she wants to be friends with you, lest you get viscously stabbed to death.

It certainly is. If she got at least 20 years, I doubt people would be discussing her now. I still find her light sentence astonishing. I read a case about two 14 year old girls from Wisconsin who are facing up to 65 years in prison for the attempted murder of their friend when they were 12.

A comment that was brought to my attention on the "visitor posts" section on her FB suggests that she is purposely being flippant and mocking Kirsten's murder by using the phrase "lifehacker". I'm referring to her answer in response to the question "life hacker? what does that mean to you?"

If she is, I hope for the sake of other people in her life, or those that cross paths with her that she is taking medication and getting therapy for her issues.

The blog and FB account is only drawing negative attention to her and she would be better off deleting it. She won't, though. As I wrote elsewhere on this blog, she will keep them going out of defiance.

How did you come across this case? Have you seen the movie or read the rolling stone article?

She never wrote me back and surprisingly she has not blocked me yet. She did delete all of my previous comments from her fb page and blog though. The movie is what got me into this case. I remember watching it so many times when i was in middle and high school and something about it just stuck with me. I came across a site one day that talked about lifetime movies that were based on true events and when I read about this case it blew my mind! I was pretty upset learning about the sentence she received and just her overall attitude about what she did. The fact that she is upset about the blog and being exposed is hilarious to me. She got to live a pretty good life it seems, she has a family who obviously still supports and stands up for her and yet she is upset that people have found out her true identity. She should be happy that she was able to slip under the radar for this long.

If you look at other comments in another section of this blog, you can read comments about people who knew Kirsten who said she was not like the character that portrayed her in the film, she was not like the character Randall Sullivan portrayed her as in the article . Even Nancy Kane said it was over done.

I've said this many times, but Kirsten was tame. Nothing she said justifies her murder.

I've read the posts from Miranda. Yes, her behavior is odd to say the least. It was pointed out to me by someone else that her posts and writing style is very similar to another silly individual who used to post here. Her name was "sweetie/get over the past and move on". That's who I think "Miranda" is.
She also appears to be back on the blog writing nonsensical ramblings. Her latest pseudonym was a guy called "el caballero" who went to Miramonte, was in Kirsten's Freshman English class, had arm wrestles with Kirsten and has a PHD in Orinda. For someone with a PHD, "his" spelling, grammar and punctuation were atrocious. I know people can have learning disabilities and be highly educated, but this person was clearly an imposter. "He" has removed his posts and writes repetitive posts and deletes them like "get over the past" used to do.

I googled her for several different reasons that I have already discussed on here. I had only posted a few times when I really became suspicious of some things. Miranda has been supportive for a couple of years. Was it fake support? If so, why? There is a difference in stating facts, discussing a case, and sharing your opinion in a sober way. When you add rants like we have been reading, it makes me want to stay clear of that person.

Miranda Carlock First of all, just to tell you if someone made mistakes that insulted in the death of someone then they definitely aren't in their right mind! That tells me they intended to kill and that they knew what they were going to do in the beginning. Thats called premeditated murder! À mistake would be like dialing the wrong phone number but murder isn't à mistake in my opinion! What did you mean by that? Drunk driving is wrong but of someone say did go out and drink and drive and kill an innocent person then they already knew that you aren't to drive when intoxicated?Because your vision is impaires and anyone in their right state of mins knows that its wrong! There is an in depth article by Michael Covino about this murder. It's available through World Cat (ask your local librarian and they'll email it to you). Several graduate students wrote their thesis on this when they were doing an internship at the Ventura School when Jeanette/Bernadette was there. The article is available through the Institute of Government Studies through the University of California at Berkeley.

Go to World Cat and type in Bernadette Protti. The article will come up--no title just Institute of Government Studies. There's also a picture of the killer.

There is a title. It's called Borderline: The Murder Trial of Bernadette Protti.

For some explicable reason, murderers always have fans and sympathizers and for Jeannette it appears to be no different.

I think a lot of it probably has to do with the negative portrayal of Kirsten in the movie and rolling stone article. People are possibly projecting their own bullying experiences onto to Kirsten and therefore sympathize with Bernadette - the killer -
