La Puma News interview with Mother of Kirsten's friend

Published by the La Puma news

Kate Ginley, Staff Writer

As the 30th anniversary of the murder of Miramonte student Kirsten Costas passes this year, Sharon Palmer, the mother of a friend to Costas as well as the girl convicted of the murder, considered the tragedy’s relevance to today’s Lamorinda community.

Costas, a Miramonte cheerleader, was murdered by fellow student Bernadette Protti in June of 1984. According to The Los Angeles Times, Protti was sentenced to a juvenile prison for 7 years.

30 years ago, 15-year-old Costas was lured by a fake invitation for the Bob-O-Links service group dinner. The popular cheerleader was on her way to the fictitious dinner with Protti.  Protti had volunteered to drive her. According to Palmer, “Bernadette was acting strange and Kirsten was frightened and wanted out of the car.”

Palmer recalls that Costas and Protti were in Moraga when Costas got out of the car. “Kirsten went up to a door and asked for a ride home. Her exact words were: ‘My friend is acting weird and I’m really scared. Could you drive me home?'” Palmer said.

Palmer said the Moraga citizen who Costas asked for a ride obliged and drove Costas home, but he told authorities later that there was a strange car following them. After reaching the house, the man asked if she needed him to stay, but Costas declined, claiming her neighbor was home, so it was fine.

Costas was unaware of the real danger.

Palmer said, “Rene [the neighbor] and Kirsten were really close.” However, the neighbor failed to respond when Costas signaled for help. “Rene heard banging on the door but she was home alone and thought Kirsten was at a Bobby’s meeting. She was too afraid to answer the door and only came out when she heard the ambulance,” Palmer said.

Costas was banging her fists on the door as Protti jumped out of the bushes and stabbed her with a butcher knife in a downward angle several times, puncturing her lungs.

Costas screamed and somehow made her way to a different neighbor’s house where she died in that neighbor’s arms.

Protti fled the scene before anyone had seen her.

For six months Protti went without being apprehended.  During that time, the community experienced growing anxiety. Palmer said, “I was afraid to let [my daughter] go anywhere. How could anyone when this adorable, girl that everyone loved, got stabbed?” Palmer explained that kids went out in groups, slept with lights on or even slept in their parents’ room as a result of the unsolved crime.

In August of that year, Palmer took her daughter and friends, Protti included, to Sleepy Hollow Swim Club where they had talked about how terrible a person had to be to do such a thing to their friend. “Bernadette was quiet the whole time,” Palmer recalled.

Before Protti’s involvement was discovered by authorities, Palmer’s daughter claimed she thought Protti did it. Protti sat behind her in English and Palmer’s daughter noticed Protti was acting “weird.” Her car matched the description of what the Moraga man had told the police as well. “I just have this feeling,” Palmer’s daughter told Palmer.

“Don’t say that!” Palmer remembered telling her daughter. Palmer did not think that the 16 year old yearbook editor could have done such a thing. “Bernadette was never considered a suspect,” Palmer said.

Yet, when the FBI took over the case, they found that Protti, who was thought to have passed her initial lie detector test, was actually lying. “The FBI kept interviewing her and got suspicious and she realized they were closing in on her,” Palmer said. “Bernadette confessed to a priest who told her to tell her parents. So, she confessed to her parents who called the police.”

Palmer attended the trail. She remembers Protti crying during questioning in the courtroom, with her head on the table, repeating “I couldn’t let her tell! I couldn’t let her tell! I couldn’t!”

“I think it was the shame and judgement. She didn’t care about the consequences morally. She was more ashamed of what she did than killing Kirsten,” Palmer said. “[Protti] felt if Kirsten had told what she had done that it would be the end of her life.”

Palmer also recalled the presentation of the physical evidence. “The knife was huge. It was so awful. Bernadette’s mother screamed and put her head down when she saw the knife in trial,” said Palmer.

Protti was tried as a juvenile. She was released from her incarceration at age 25. “Seven years was not enough,” Palmer said. “I don’t feel like she’s been adequately punished.”

Protti was charged with second-degree murder. “I don’t think she set out to intentionally kill her,” Palmer said. “Her sister had the knife in the car for work and [Protti] knew where it was.”

In 1985, author Rob Haeseler wrote The San Francisco Chronicle article, “Trial Hears Girl’s Confession of East Bay Slaying.” It reported that Protti only wanted to “hurt” Costas. In another article by Haeseler, he wrote, “unanswered to the end was what provoked Protti to stab Costas to death after luring her to a bogus sorority initiation dinner.”

“I thought that she was going to tell everybody at school that I was really weird,” Protti claimed during trial.

The movie “The Death of a Cheerleader,” based on the events of Costas’ murder, presented Protti as jealous of Costas. Palmer disagrees.  She thinks that Protti feared Costas was going to reveal a secret.

“It was not jealously! She made a pass at her. What else could it be?” She said, “I think [Protti] was gay. It was a big deal back then and wasn’t accepted like it is now. People thought it was drugs, but I got that feeling from the trial.”

“[Costas] had no way of knowing that Bernadette was thinking a great deal about her,” stated another article in 1985 by People magazine. “And the one person whose acceptance meant so much [to Protti], the one she so desperately wanted to talk to, has tragically been silenced forever.”

“Bernadette was smart but had no idea that Kirsten wouldn’t be interested. Kirsten was like a puppy. She hugged people, wasn’t exclusive and liked everyone,” Palmer said. “[Protti] probably tried to kiss her and it freaked her out. Kirsten was immature and would have told people what had happened,” Palmer explained.

“30 years ago, it was a big deal to be a lesbian,” said Palmer.

Though time has passed, the murder is still a disturbing memory for a generation of Moraga residents. “People want to forget it. That’s why there is no memorial this year,” said Palmer.

30 years later, the pressure fit in is still a relevant social concern.  The 2014 film “Mean Girl Murderer Case,” depicts two girls who kill a friend when they fear she knows about their lesbian relationship.

Though the Bay Area is seen as a progressive community, and social organizations and educational institutions continue to preach tolerance, Palmer believes that Lamorinda is still lagging behind.

“I do not think anything has changed but perhaps more [competition] and stress,” Palmer said.

And just think-while Kirsten is a just a memory to those who loved her Bern has been able to go to college, become a nurse and have basically a good life.

I thought Bernadette WASN'T on the yearbook staff. Why does it say she was yearbook editor?

Either way, it's an interesting article. I still don't think Bernadette had a crush on Kirsten, but I don't doubt a bit that she very well could have told her something really private. She was so desperate to be friends with Kirsten, she might have thought telling her a secret would help them bond. Instead, it just freaked Kirsten out. Wonder what the secret was...

Too bad there isn't something about this case on the ID channel. A whole hour devoted to it, probably because we all know who did it, but would be interested to talk the other kids, and parents

Sue, there have been a few short segments on this case on the ID channel. The last one had an interview with the girl who was originally blamed, and the woman who Bernadette babysat for. Here is the link and it's about 25 minutes in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V4GxTG7Z1E

All other reports said she was not on the yearbook staff much less editor. So that part is a little confusing.

Good article and interesting to hear from someone who knew both parties involved and knew what life was like in that town. I still don't think she was gay. She was just very insecure living in a town that did not accept insecurity. What a sad, sad story.

This was not about insecurity. This was about a socipathic teenage girl who became obsessed with another teenage girl because she represented what the sociopath couldn't achieve.

Bernadette couldn't measure up to Kirsten, Kirsten was everything she wanted to be and couldn't be. Bernadette wasn't popular she only got in the Bobbies through a good childhood friend of her s who was. Popular. She had Bernadette initiated, Kirsten and some of her friends knew Bernadette wasn't all there but had no idea she was a weirdo and obsessed with Kirsten. Bernadette was bullied some earlier in childhood but after the murder she was extensively bullied when seen out of courtroom she was the most hated Orinda girl. I went to school at Miramonte in the 80 s and I remember this well the 2 that were accussed of the crime they left Orinda cause of it but later other students made up with them. No one will make up with Bernadette over all this and her jealousy got the best of her for awhile she was starting to become popular but after that incident she would never of been if she d return to Miramonte she d.had it worse than the 2 accussed of murdering Kirsten. She may of changed but it won't change people s minds and hearts of those who knew Kirsten she was so cute and funny. Her 2 close friends Stacy Bennett was homecoming queen her senior year she was a lot like Kirsten so was. Diane McDonald and Caroline Norris was a cool friend of theirs. Where are those girls at we d love to hear from them. Youmguysmout there post also homecoming queen Stacy Bennett hear form you to. Bernadette wanted homecoming queen wasn't going to happen anyway she doesn't have what it takes to be popular, she s almost if not socially awkward she was in high school as I recall..

It's to bad you had to go through all that Bernadette whether or not you were bullied, you knew in the courtroom what all was going on, and how they felt about you there. It was a humiliating time for you those days and you knew they were against you.

I hope in 30 years were not still discussing this, maybe in the next 10 or 20 she will die and then just maybe you all will shut up about her and leave her alone.

Get over the past and move on I think we are all in aagreement here that no one wants anyone to die but to take a life is wrong! Please understand and put yourself in the costas shoes and picture what they had to endure and what they have to go through now! I pray that the costas will have peace and assurance that they will see their beloved child one again when Jesus returns!

Don't care who you are, you have no idea of what the Costa s family went through, and Kirsten's classmates and friends. We missed that sweet little girl, and we lost a good friend all for jealousy cause a girl couldn't achieve what Kirsten achieved. Kirsten was so cute and funny everyone wanted to be her friend and she was friends with practically everyone.,,one s who say she was a snob is cause they didn't measure up to her, Kirsten spoke to everybody at school. Was one of the nicest girls Imknew and Bernadette struggled more to be liked and had only a handful of friends

Kirsten made some cupcakes once saying best friends she had a lot of besties and was easy to talk to non judgemental. Bernadette was just an obsessive weirdo who desired to be Kirsten and wanted her life and stalked her. Bernadette had a guy she briefly dated he discovered she was odd and didn't want to be bothered with her he spotted she was trouble and even questioned if she was the murderer. Then she met another while locked up created drama at the youth facility and accussed him of cheating on her her revisions high school, boyfriend kept getting calls from her all the time so he spotted she was a weirdo and stopped talking to her and had that image she could be dangerous.

Bernadette wasn't popular she just was a wanna be and yes she dated but that man spotted something was wrong with her and after he discovered she was the murderer he was mortified. She was humiliated at her trial everyone rushed to watch the trail and watch her pay former crime and upset over the verdict. Bernadette even told it that there's 500 Miramonte waiting to get thier hands on her she was protected the whole time. Anything else just a

I meant just ask we all reminess about Kirsten and what she d be like today she wanted to go to college and be a nurse I believe maybe her other friends will get on here and we can reunite, the 2 that were ran out one Joanna and other Nancy but after the arrest students made up with them and really a Bernadette was so so embarrassed at her trial and it was so so packed they removed about 70 people a day from the courtroom to wait outside Miramonte students and parents it was so so bad. Her friends thought we were evil.

Annoymous Feb 25 10:15 AM Feel sorry for Bernadette on the humiliation she went through at her trial, it was her discussion, and she humiliated herself, look at the previous post we all miss Kirsten and wonder the girl she d be today, you feel sorry for a Bernadette and get over the past you defend her cause everyone turned on her. We have choices we make choices and the choices we make in life can effect our social life and Bernadette made the choice to take another life. So you feel sorry for her, are you kidding me.

I don't feel sorry for Jeannette and never will. She is a murderer. She can go to hell for all i care. Kirsten wanted to be a nurse? How weird that Jeannette became a nurse.

At February 28, 2016 at 10:51 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't either never thought of the face she s a nurse now and Kirsten wanted to become a nurse. She wanted to become Kirsten to so ironic isn't it. She was so obsessed over her it was unreal. She was strange then and still is strange I always thought Bernadette was weird so did a lot of people. She wasn't like Kelley Martin who, portrayed her life that's not now it really went She looked like Bernadette with brown hair and Tori would come closer to looking more like Bernadette than she did Kirsten. Kirsten was small and cute. Jeanette a nurse is so scary what if she got mad at a patient I wouldn't want her as my nurse.

Rumors Bernadette wants to come to Miramonte door a reunion , if so, she has to be crazy, no one would want to see her there it d be the loneliest night of her life, she d get ignored and cold shouldered and they d probaly walk away from her if she came to greet them or sat beside them. Thier feelings about her hasn't changed just more mature enough not to beat the crap out of her knowing they could go to jail for it. Bernadette thinks they forgive and forget it, no that's not the real world, and her so called former high school boyfriend wouldn't want to see her or talk to her at all just as a lot of former students. You can come Bernadette but you will be disappointed and sorry like ai said, it'd be the loneliest night and worst night of your life, no one will talk to you at all they d just walk away from you. Miramonte student of the 80 s.

Bernadette, I doubt your high school best friend would want to see you, if she did she d kept in contact with you. She even wised up after getting harrassed over defending you, she even got smart. If she does want to see you, she d be the only one from class of 86 that would. She would risk her association with you though I wouldn't.

To "Get over the past and move on" Why don't YOU GET THE HELL off of this site. Clearly you are Bernadette/Jeannette or one of her family members. Like it has been stated NUMEROUS times; Bernadette/ Jeannette's pleadings and weak attempt at a so-called, apology, or "I can't change the past, or bring Kirsten back", are not good enough. She does NOT feel GENUINE sympathy or remorse for murdering Kirsten. She CAN'T; she is a sociopath. JUST like the FBI indicated: " She will have no remorse for the murder, and felt quite satisfied in her mind that she killed Kirsten". Bernadette/Jeannette admitted this to be true. This case will always be relevant. Bernadette/Jeannette and her sisters are very arrogant. Bernadette/Jeannette continues to constantly lie about who she is, etc. Not ONLY is she a KILLER, but a LIAR too. Posting pictures of innocent women on her blogs, and on google images is DESPICABLE.

Anonymous: the person who is posting under "get over the past" isn't a family member of Bernadette, but it is understandable why anyone would think so. She writes under different names supporting Bernadette/Jeannette under one name and Kirsten under another. It is just for her own amusement.

Went to school with both girls,"Bernadette wasn't gay". Kirsten was adorable, and wasn't any bully (by any means) either. Something went horribly wrong, and, "Bernadette snapped"... It was Social Pressure, still no excuse to kill. Kirsten will always be loved and remembered.

The Mother of this friend of Bernadette’s is absolutely right. She’s describing things to a “T” and Kirsten mostly. She was “huggable” and well mannered. Her daughter was a nice girl and (popular) like Kirsten. She helped out Kirsten’s friends through this ordeal. This girl was a friend of Kirsten’s as well. Bernadette was all their friend as well, she was included like this Mother describes.
